TUTORIAL : WINDOWS 95 DIAL-UP NETWORKING

How
to setup Windows 95 Dial-Up networking for Internet Chicago.
I.
Install Dial-Up Networking.
- Double
click on My Computer. Double click on Control Panel.
- Double
click on Add/Remove Programs.
- Select
the "Windows Setup" tab from the top of the window. Click on Communications
then Details. If "Dial-Up Networking" is not checked, check it
now. Click on O.K. and the window will close. Click on O.K. again.
Windows may ask for an installation disk or CD to install the
files for Dial-Up Networking.
II.
Install network components.
- Double
click on the Network icon. Under "The following network components
are installed:", remove Client for Netware Networks, IPX/SPX compatible
Protocol, and NetBEUI. All that should be left is Client for Microsoft
Networks, Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP. If TCP/IP is not listed,
click on Add. Double click on "Protocol." Then select Microsoft
from the manufacturers list, and TCP/IP from the network protocols
list and click O.K.

- Click
on TCP/IP and click Properties.
- Click
on the tab for "WINS Configuration." Make sure this is set to
"Disable WINS resolution." Click on O.K. Click O.K. again to close
the Network control panel.
IV.
Set up the Connection Icon.
If
you have not set up your modem, Windows will attempt to detect it
automatically during these steps. If Windows fails, select your
modem from the list presented.
- Double
click on the Internet icon.

Click on the Connection tab.

Check the box next to "Connect to the Internet as needed." Click
the Add… button.
- Give
the connection a name, such as Internet Chicago. Click Next.

Enter the number for your local Internet
Chicago dialup location
- Click
Finish.
Note
for users with call waiting: If you have this service you may
want to disable it while you are online. An incoming call may disconnect
you from Internet Chicago. Call waiting can usually be turned off
for the duration of a call by adding "*70," to the beginning of
a phone number, i.e. *70,895-7759
V.
Set up the Dial-Up properties.

- Click
Properties. Click on Server Type. Make sure you have the following
settings.
- Log
on to network is not checked.
Enable Software compression is checked.
Require encrypted password is not checked.
TCP/IP is the only enabled protocol. Uncheck IPX/SPX and NetBEUI.
- Click
on TCP/IP settings. Make sure "server assigned IP address" and
"server assigned name server addresses" are checked.
- Click
on O.K. three times to close all the windows.

VI.
Connect to Internet Chicago
- Double
click the Internet icon on the desktop.
- Type
in your username and password.
- Click
the Connect button to dial
